The Life of Lane Frost

The Beginning -  Lane, born in Colorado, followed in his father's footsteps as a bull rider. One of three children raised in Utah, Lane showed early signs of interest in riding bulls. As a baby, these events soothed him. When Lane Frost was around 6, he rode dairy calves, sporting chaps made by his mother. Secretly, his parents harbored thoughts of Lane curbing his bull riding plans, but they always supported him. Luckily, Lane met Don Gay who discouraged serious bull riding till Lane's bones were more developed. At the age of ten, Lane won awards at his first rodeo, riding a Shetland. He was also very ardent about helping his father run the family farm and ranch. Lane waited patiently till he was 15 when he began riding bulls.

The Road to Riding Bulls - Lane had the good fortune to lead a life doing what he loved - riding bulls. It was his career choice. Nonetheless, in junior high, he took a fancy to wrestling for a while, winning most competitions. In 1978, he moved to Oklahoma with his family. In the years during this period, a family friend, Freckles Brown, became a mentor in Lane's bull riding career. He was going to become a huge influence in Lane's success later on.

Winning Ways - In 1978, and 1980, respectively, Lane Frost won rodeo championships with ease. In fact, 1980 proved to be a great year for Lane in many aspects of his life. He met his future wife Kellie Kyle, and his long-standing friend, Tuff Hedeman in the same year. Furthermore, while he graduated from high school, he won a lot more rodeo championships. He was repeatedly crowned the youth champion. In spite of being offered a rodeo scholarship, Lane chose a career path of professional bull riding, giving up on a formal education.

With more competitive wins under his belt, Lane convinced his father to create a bull riding arena on the family ranch. He would train here and hold classes for others to learn the sport. During this time, Lane qualified for the National Finals Rodeo each year (from 1984 - 1989).

A Life on His Terms - In 1985, Lane married Kellie Kyle. He also taught the first bull riding class at his arena on his family's ranch. In the same year, Mr. T, a bull, hung Lane till he was injured. In the same year, Lane won top honors at the prestigious Winston Tour Rodeo. He came in third position in the world. The next year saw Lane get the runner up prize in the same championship. In 1987, Lane and his wife shifted residence to Texas, Kellie's home state. Lane wished to build his own ranch here, yet continued to be close to his family ranch. Unfortunately, in 1987, Freckles Brown passed away, failing to witness many of Lane's wins. 1987 was also the year in which Lane Frost became the rodeo bull riding world champion.

No Stopping Lane - In 1988, after an exhibition victory at the Winter Olympics, lane went on to ride bulls in Copenhagen. He also took part in other American championships. If Lane had to live a life, it was riding bulls and never stopping. In 1989, Lane continued his competitive edge and went for a tournament in Wyoming. His wife remained at home as the couple had been hired as stunt doubles in a Hollywood movie.

While the Wyoming competition ride was successful with Lane Frost about to take another win, tragedy struck. Lane dismounted from the bull easily. Nonetheless, the bull attacked Lane and injured his ribs which penetrated a major artery. Lane passed away on the spot. Earlier on in his career, Lane had embraced Christ and asked for salvation. After death, he was sure to get a special place in heaven for his good deeds and brave life.
